Winter is here, and ‘tis the season for dull, flaky, dry skin. Cold temperatures and low humidity levels result in dry air that pulls moisture away from the skin. This impacts us all but can be an even bigger issue if you’re prone to eczema, aging skin, or other dry skin conditions. Thankfully, there are a few ways that you – and your skin – can get through winter looking healthy, glowing and vibrant. With a little care and some helpful tips, we will get you through the worst that winter throws at us. What is good for skin in winter? Read on for our best winter skin care tips.
Winter Skin Care Tip #1: Hydrate!
Before you reach for any cream, lotion, or other skincare product, reach for a glass at the kitchen sink. Regardless of the time of year, summer or winter, our bodies require about eight glasses of water per day. Staying adequately hydrated is not only necessary for your overall health but also detrimental to your skin’s health and beauty. If your skin doesn’t get enough water, it will become dry, tight, and flaky and become even more prone to aging. Wrinkles, puffiness, acne, and enlarged pores are all signs of dehydrated skin.
Drinking enough water will plump and tighten the skin, promote collagen production, and even flush acne toxins from your body. Good for skin in winter- and year round!
Winter Skin Care Tip #2: Eat a variety of healthy food
Leftover Christmas chocolates, cozy nights with Netflix and chips, and heavy comfort foods are doing little for your winter skin. There is an undeniable connection between gut health and skin health – if your gut is not healthy, it will show on your face. So put your best face forward by increasing your daily intake of healthy fats, fruits and vegetables. Good sources include nuts, olive oil, sweet potatoes, and grapefruit, which are easy to find this time of year.
Winter Skin Care Tip #3: Get your beauty sleep
There is actually truth behind the concept of beauty sleep! Even one night of reduced sleep can reflect a paler, wrinkled, and droopy face. Combine that with the cold temperatures of the winter, and you are doing yourself no favours. Seven to nine hours of sleep a night is vital to keeping you looking fresh and youthful. Here are a few tips for creating healthy sleep habits that are good for skin in winter and overall health:
- Keep a regular sleep schedule: Try going to bed around the same time each night – even on the weekends. Of course, this also applies to getting up at the same time. Although sleeping in on a Sunday morning can be blissful, it can wreak havoc on your internal clock.
- Sleep in a dark room: Exposure to artificial light while sleeping, such as a TV, your phone, or even a lamp, can interrupt sleep.
- Don’t eat right before bed. Eating before bed can cause waking after sleep onset, leading to insomnia.
- Limit screen time to at least 1 hour before bed. Scrolling through Instagram and Facebook as you lay in bed could sabotage your sleep by stimulating your brain. Put your phone away at least 60 minutes before bedtime.
- Engage in 30 or more minutes of exercise and physical activity each day. This can help relieve stress and aid in a restful slumber.

Winter Skin Care Tip #4: The Amazing Power of Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil may be best known as a remedy for dry skin, which makes it our best friend when the wintery wind blows, but it does so much more!
Anti-aging qualities – By increasing collagen, jojoba oil keeps your skin looking and feeling firm and supple. Also incredibly hydrating, jojoba oil makes your skin glow and look fresh, even during the coldest days.
Reduces Acne – Another benefit of jojoba oil for your skin – it is an excellent choice for battling acne. Not only is it non-comedogenic, which means it will not clog your pores, but jojoba oil also regulates sebum production. This keeps skin from looking oily and helps prevent breakouts.
Reduces the appearance of scars and accelerates healing – Jojoba oil has anti-inflammatory agents and healing properties. The Vitamin E in jojoba oil helps fade scars from acne or other injuries. This also accelerates the healing process for eczema and psoriasis, which often flare up in the wintertime.

Winter Skin Care Tip #5: Your Winter Skin Care Routine
Following a skincare routine is essential to combating winter-ravaged skin. Maritime Naturals is happy to offer some best practices for youthful and amazing-looking skin this season. Look no further than our Some Serious Hydration skincare bundle. Our secret ingredient? Jojoba oil! Apply these products to cleansed skin, morning and night, to help leave skin hydrated, plump and radiant this winter.
Some Serious Hydration Bundle includes:
Maritime Naturals Rose Water Hydration Spray Toner
You may remember facial toners being heavily marketed for the breakouts and oily shine of acne-prone skin. Our new modern-day toner has come a long way! Targeting a range of skin concerns from acne to aging, this toner is formulated to be very gentle and more pH balanced than toners of the past. Our Hydration Spray toner is used as an intermediate step in your skincare routine – that is, after cleansing and before serum. Not only does it hydrate, but it also cleanses, balances pH levels, and preps your skin for other products. In addition, it can help restore nutrients in the skin, leaving your face looking smooth and soft. It can also help even out redness, close pores, and prevent ingrown hairs. The result is beautiful-looking skin! Feel free to spray Maritime Naturals Rose Water on throughout the day whenever you need some extra hydration.
Maritime Naturals Vitamin C Serum
This mighty serum will penetrate deeply into the skin, where it can do the most good. It works wonderfully for specific concerns that cold temperatures bring, such as dry skin, dullness, and wrinkles. This L-ascorbic acid serum also contains jojoba oil, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E – an excellent combination of antioxidants.
Maritime Naturals Daily Collagen Moisturizer
Moisturizers and serums are equally important and should be used in combination with each other. For the best impact, it is also important to use these products in the correct order. The rule of thumb is: always follow your serum with your moisturizer! Maritime Naturals Daily Collagen Moisturizer is one of our favourites. This daily anti-aging moisturizer is formulated with collagen and retinol to improve elasticity, giving you radiant, youthful, plump skin. This anti-wrinkle pH-balanced hydrating formula includes ingredients such as Lavender, Jojoba Oil, Shea Butter, Vitamin E and loads of unique active botanicals to promote firmness.
Maritime Naturals Tip: During the winter, you may want to massage your moisturizer into your skin for 30 seconds to maximize its effects.
Winter Skin Care Tip #5: Finally, and most importantly, use good quality sunscreen.
Although it may seem like the sun is harmless this time of year, you should be protecting your skin from harmful UV rays all throughout the year. Although there may be fewer UVB rays in winter, UVA levels penetrate the skin’s deepest layers and are still significant enough to harm your skin.
